Thursdays Thought – Large Families

Thursdays thought is brought to you by Pinkoddy and her meme of Thursdays Thought

Todays thought is inspired by the recent news of the Duggers Family expecting their 20th child.

Is having a large family a bad thing?

If children are looked after and provided for then is that not OK? And I dont mean just in the material sense. Children in all size families still need to be raised with knowledge of right and wrong and common decency. Are parents of larger families able to provide this for their family?

Are children from larger families more or less likely to become delinquents because of this lack of constructive ‘time’ ?

At what point should parents stop having more babies? Who is to say what parents can or can not cope with?

I can only say from my experiences so far, I love having a larger than average family. OK at times I do feel a little stretched with my time for them, especially if one of them is ill or needing extra attention due to potty training or the eldest needs extra help with homework, they still manage to get some precious time with each of us. But they are good kids, they try hard at school, they are polite when out in public and wouldnt DARE to bring the police to my door.

I guess with everything, there is always the exceptions and you get the rough, delinquent families, but I would say the majority of the larger families I am in contact with are like myself and have children we are very proud of.

Although I dont normally think that there is such a thing as too many children as long as you love them and care for them and make them into decent people, I cant help but feel a little hypocritical of myself and say that 20 is too many. Saying that though none of the Duggers children have ASBOs or any criminal records of any kind.

The one advantage larger families have in this day and age, is if the economy goes balls up, we can all live in one big house and pool all our resources and survive that way.

I will be looking forward to hearing your thoughts

  1. Hmmm, this is a tricky one for me, while I don’t think there should be a limit on the amount of children people should be allowed to have (unlike in china< where they are limiting it to just 1 child per family) I do think that 20 is a little on the excessive side. I don't for 1 minute doubt that she loves her children dearly and has their best interests at heart. I'm looking at the aspect of health implications for her and her unborn child, wasn't her last child born extremely premature and didn't nearly make it? Is it right to inflict this onto the others in the family? I know that there are risks with every pregnancy, whether it be you first or you twenty first, but the more pregnancies you have the higher risk you are putting yourself at< and with a family this size it would have a huge knock on effect on everybody.
In some respects I personally feel that they are being very selfish and tempting fate, but then another part of me says, good on them, they are living their lives how they want to and not being influenced by society and trying to fit in to the norm. As I say a tricky one. I would love to have a large family, but practically I can only see my self having 1 more child, I already have 1 daughter, unless we win the lottery and then I may turn into the new Mrs Dugger!! :p

  2. I am a mummy of 2 and I wouldn’t rule out trying for a third in the future. I think that people should have as many children as they choose so long as they can afford to look after them without expecting the state to pay. I work part-time, my husband works full time and we get minimal financial support from the government which is fair enough as we can afford to live well without it. But I know many families with 2/3/4 children who refuse to work and who live off the state – why should I pay my taxes so they can have more children and spend all day at home with them?!

  3. I think you have to think about each case individually. We decided to stop because each child was born slightly earlier. Whilst I appreciate 35 weeks isn’t that early it did make us question how we would cope if a baby was very ill.

It depends on the level of support you have and how much sleep you need lol.

I think people judge others on their own abilities. I know a couple struggling with 2 so anyone with any more kids must be letting their kids down somewhere 😁
